Beneath the Surface

Tree roots are fascinating. They don't seem to have any rules or obvious repeating patterns when I've tried to draw them. They seem more liquid than wood as they wind though soil, around rocks and eachother. They flow right through eachother. Roots are usually unseen. A mystery. A secret interwoven world underground. The subconsciousness of the forest.

I am exploring my own underground systems. Making efforts to direct strong roots in ways to support myself. Examining the balance and sway my life requires.

This painting is created by removing paint rather than adding it. A very meditative process requiring a clear vision and something like confident spontaneity.
